Occupational Therapist BSc (Hons)
Susie graduated from Southampton University with a First class Honours degree in Occupational Therapy, in 2002. She has worked primarily within the area of Neurology – Acute stroke units in North London until 2009, then in-patient rehabilitation in Hertfordshire until 2013. Susie has been working in private practice since 2015, and worked for the NHS until 2017.
In her last NHS post, Susie worked as a Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist within the Hertfordshire Neurological service. She worked with a wide variety of adults, with Neurological conditions who were living in the community. The focus was to look at ways to enable people to live as independently as possible while managing their long-term condition. SMART goals were set with all of her patients, to ensure she was addressing their needs and wants. Her work involved upper limb assessment and treatment, splinting, fatigue management, wheelchair referrals, advice regarding equipment and housing adaptations, vocational rehab, anxiety management, and general exercise programs to improve functional movement, as well as reduce the progression of conditions.
In 2015, Susie completed her training in LSVT BIG, which is a treatment approach used for people with Parkinson’s Disease. The technique promotes large amplitude movements, which are aimed at reversing bradykinesia. She has used it to great success to enable people to manage large movements such as bed mobility, transfers and general mobility, as well as fine motor skills such as writing, handling money, packing shopping, and managing buttons/zips.
Susie loves being an Occupational Therapist, and always develops a professional and trusting relationship with all of her patients. She is based in Berkhamsted, where she lives with her husband and two children. When not working, Susie enjoys interior design, gardening, running and going to the gym. She also loves walking her friend’s dogs!
